After four years at Barnsley, Cauley Woodrow left Barnsley FC leaving a need for a striker to add to Michael Duff's side. In this article, I will identify and analyse a possible replacement for Woodrow.
IDENTIFYING THE REPLACEMENT
To identify a replacement for Woodrow, I looked at the top 10 League Two goalscorer's stats.
The below chart shows each player's stats per 90. Goals and Assists stats per 90 show goalscoring and assist quantity without taking into account minutes played. For example, if 1 player scored 7 goals in 40 games and another scored 5 goals in 12 games, the latter would have a higher goals per 90 rate - showing his goalscoring frequency excluding game time.
Steven's has the 2nd highest Goals-per 90 in League Two and 3rd highest Goals and assists per 90 in League Two last season showing high levels of goal-scoring rates.
The next stat shows goals scored per shot - again this shot rules out unfair circumstances players might have. If one player gets more chances to shoot, they will naturally score more goals but goals scored per shot stats show the amount of goals scored per shot taken thus ruling out unfair circumstances each player may have.
The table shows Stevens' having the highest goals per shot rate and highest goals per shot on target - clearly showing that he is incredibly clinical.
MORE ON STEVENS
Now the stats have shown Stevens to be a prolific goal scorer, let's take a further look into the player.
Matt Stevens is a 24-year-old striker who plays for Forest Green Rovers. He played 37 matches for Forest Green last season as they won League Two. He scored 23 goals in League Two last season, the second highest goal total in league two.
Stevens has played 159 games since his career started in 2014 whilst scoring 54 goals.
The below shows Stevens' heatmap and playing positions
The stats shown clearly show Stevens' to be clinical and should the players behind him create chances we can be sure that Stevens should score goals. Luke Thomas, Luca Connell, Herbie Kane, Josh Benson, and many others will bring quality chances and playmaking.
Steven's won League Two last season for Forest Green - playing alongside Jack Aitchinson (who was on loan at FGR from Barnsley) as well as Nicky Cadden who Barnsley are said to be interested in signing.
Matt Stevens featured in the official League Two team of the season, as well as Nicky Cadden.
