The former Barnsley players at the World Cup

Updated: Nov 17, 2022

John Stones

Fondly remembered at Oakwell, John Stones is the finest prospect from Barnsley's academy. John played 24 times for the reds before being snapped up by Everton for a reported £3 million transfer fee.

Stones went on to play 77 times for the toffee's before becoming one of Pep Guardiola's first Man City signings. He joined City for £47.5million, a fee which made him the 2nd most expensive defender in the world at the time. Barnsley earned £6.78million from Stones' 15% sell on clause, which was more than the initial transfer fee.

Impact at the World Cup

There has been much debate about England's starting 11 in Qatar but John is one of very few names that is in nearly everyone's favoured 11 for the tournament. This will be his 4th major tournament with England and he has become one of the most experienced players in the England set up.

Kirean Trippier

The right back was on loan at Barnsley between 2010 and 2011 and made 39 appearances, scoring 2 goals including a wonderful free-kick against Leeds.

It was revealed that Kirean Trippier was set to sign for the reds permanently but when Keith Hill came in as manager he turned the opportunity down. What a mistake that has proved to be.

Trippier then signed for Burnley before moving on to Tottenham Hotspur. He played for Spurs for 4 years and made 69 appearances for the London side. After his time at spurs, he moved to Atletico Madrid for £20 million. He won te only major trophy in his career there as he won La Liga in 2020/21.

Kirean then moved onto Newcastle United and became one of the first signings of their controversial Saudi owners. He has been in amazing form since signing for the magpies and has played a key role in Newcastle's recent rise.

Impact at the World Cup

A combination of the injury to Reece James and Trippier's sparkling form man that Keiran will likely be England's first choice right back in Qatar. Similar to Stones, Trippier has been around the England set-up for a while and has also played vital parts in England's previous tournaments.

Harry Maguire

Maguire first played for Barnsley's academy, before joining Sheffield United's academy. Although only briefly playing for Barnsley's academy, Maguire can still be classed as a former Barnsley player.

Impact at the World Cup

Maguire goes into the world cup on the back of poor form and a series of games on the bench. He has received strong criticism for the last 2 League seasons and has performed poorly over the last 18 months.

However, Maguire has developed a strong partnership over the years with fellow South Yorkshire lad John Stones. The pair have witnessed England's highs and lows together and have developed a tried and tested partnership. The pair have been very public about the friendship. Strong partnerships are key in tournament football and John Stones and Harry Maguire’s partnership could be the key to England’s success.

Kieffer Moore

The Welsh Striker 1 and a half seasons at Oakwell and made 51 appearances during his time in South Yorkshire, scoring 21 goals. He was a key part of our promotion to the Championship under Daniel Stendel in 2018/19.

Following winning promotion with the tykes, he signed for Wigan. But the move didn’t end very well for him, as Clarke Odour scored a last minute winner that relegated Wigan and resulted in Barnsley’s survival.

Wigan then fell into administration, meaning Kieffer joined Cardiff City for a knock-down fee. He made 64 appearances for the bluebirds and scored 25 goals, similar to his record at Barnsley. He then left Cardiff in January 2022 to join AFC Bournemouth. The move from Cardiff to Bournemouth worked better than his move from Barnsley to Wigan as he scored a 83rd minute goal against Nottingham Forest that secured promotion to the Premier League for Bournemouth.

Impact at the World Cup

Kieffer will likely feature heavily for Wales this winter, he has become an ever present feature in the Wales squad and now playing frequently in the Premier League, Kieffer Moore could be one to watch in this competition.

Adam Davies

The Welsh goalkeeper spent 5 years at Oakwell, winning at Wembley twice in 2016 as well as captaining the reds to promotion in 2018/19. He played 184 games for the reds.

Davies joined Stoke City on a free transfer in 2019 after opting not to extend his Barnsley contract. He was in and out of the side in his 3 years at Stoke and played 33 times. Davies then moved onto Sheffield United in January 2022 to join his former Barnsley boss Paul Heckingbottom at the blades.

Impact at the World Cup

Adam will unlikely feature for Wales, being brought to the World Cup purely as a back-up.
